PREPARING BLOOD TYPING SOLUTIONS

Procedure

** Please note that in the chemical formula there are no subscripts, just the number in or after the symbol

To 100 ml water, add to each of the following:

• Type A - 6 g CaCl2
• Type B - 2.5 g BaCl2
• Type AB - 6 g CaCl2 and 2.5 g BaCL2
• Type 0 - add nothing to the water

To each solution add about 25 ml of 25% Congo Red.

Label portions of the solutions with names to provide unknowns for identification by comparison with known. By varying the amount of Congo Red added to each sample the "blood" can appear visibly different - from anaemic to 'true-blue'.

For the antiserums:

• Anti A - 100 ml 0.1 M Na2CO3 and 1 drop of blue food colouring
• Anti B - 100 ml 0.2 M (NH4)2CO3 and 1 drop of yellow food colouring
